3D Watermelon Slice Box Papercraft Tutorial

3d watermelon box is a dimensional object created from cardstock.
Original svg cut file design is by Jodi G. Warner,
available through SnapDragon Snippets from
the Silhouette America online store.

This image shows the lid and base sections separated.
Melon box is constructed from dark and medium green,
red and shiny black cardstock.
It is approximately 4.5" wide x 3" tall.
Use this fun shape as a party favor,
to hold treats or treasures for a summer gathering or event,
or use as outdoor table cloth "anchors" by filling with something heavy
like rock candy or a sealed baggie of dry beans.

Begin by identifying the base "wedge" piece and the two base sides.

Bend the wedge side tabs inward ("mountain" folds), and bend the cross perforations as "mountain" folds.

Match the flat center bottom edge of first side piece to the center wedge tab fold edge. Apply glue to tab, carefully align and center the edge to at the fold, then hold to secure.

Continue to shape the wedge around the side edges and glue the corresponding edge to the tab until one side is in place. Repeat for the other side.

This image shows the completed base.

Begin lid by identifying the lid front and back pieces and the rim reinforcement arcs. Apply glue to the arc backside, then position on the BACKSIDE of the lid side so edges line up. NOTE that arc does not reach to the top of the watermelon sides.

Identify the lid top shape. Bend side tabs back, and cross perforations at "bite" area inward as "valley" folds. Bend end pieces back as "mountain" folds.

Locate center section of bite perforations and corresponding center edge of cutout. Apply glue, then align and hold in place until secure.

Continue aligning and gluing corresponding edges and folds together toward each end of the semi-circular cutout.

When bite curve is completed, bend and align short and long straight sections to top of front and back. This image shows how the "miter" overlap will look as the tabs are prepared and attached to long edges.

Bend end pieces down into position, then glue tabs in place under front edges. NOTE that the ends extend only partially down the sides of the lid so that it can be slid into place over the base.

Repeat the attachment steps for the back.

Position the corresponding red semi-circle pieces on the front and back, taking care to align bite and top edges precisely.

Next position and attach the narrow green rind semi-circle as shown.

Identify the red top accent "strip" and bend perforations for "bite" area inward (valley folds). Apply adhesive and carefully glue in place at top curved and straight edges. Ends should align with the sides of the red semi-circle pieces of front and back.

Locate and glue in place the small green end pieces that complete the top.

Position and glue seeds in place (small cutout holes on red semi-circle provide position guidance).

This image shows how the lid fits over the base.
