Snowflake Petals Gift Box

This unique snowflake-topped gift box is composed
of hexagon base with a closely-fitting lid.
Pinch-folded pointed ovals on lid top resemble
flower petals pushed inward to gather at center
where strong glue holds them in place

Six scalloped overlays come together at oval points
to form a snowflake, with half-snowflake accents
peeking between points from wall sides.
Further decoration is added with accents
on base and lid side panels.

A small snowflake sits on top where a stud
or jewel can add the final sparkly touch.
Container base can hold 1/2 cup (8 oz.)
loose candies or another small gift or
a standard gift card (upright between angles).
Create and give this box as a keepsake
for Christmas, New Year’s Day, winter solstice,
winter wedding or birthday.
Box measures approx. 3” wide x 3.375” long
x 3” tall when closed.
Snowflake top has a 4.75” span between longest points.

ASSEMBLY:
1. Identify and cut the shapes:
A box base hull (shown with one accent in place)
B base side wall accents (6)
C base interior bottom hexagon panel
D base exterior bottom hexagon cover
E opt. base interior accent liner
F lid hull shape (shown with one side accent)
G lid side wall accent rectangles (6)
H lid interior underside reinforcement
I snowflake oval edge overlays (6)
J half snowflake side wall extension accents (6)
K snowflake overlay tip point reinforcements (6)
L snowflake top accent (4-5 to layer for thickness)
2. Prepare the thickened snowflake accent by stacking
cut shapes one by one, taking care that cut edges are
aligned as precisely as possible.
Immediately press the stack under a flat heavy weight
and leave in place until completely dry, for a few hours
or overnight. This will help prevent warping and curling
when liquid adhesive is used.
BASE ASSEMBLY
3. Prepare the base hull shape by bending back on
all perforation lines for hull walls, bottom, top and
side tabs.
4. Position each accent within the defining fold lines
of each side wall facet, centered side to side and
with the same offset margin at accent bottom, with
rounded corners downward. Press until dry.
5. Form the base into a tube to overlap the straight
side edge across the opposite tab, adjust for
top to bottom alignment and glue the seam.
6. At top edge, bend each of the rim tabs to the inside
of the hull and glue in place.
NOTE that the top tabs can be pressed flat at this stage
to assist with securing the joining by flattening
the hull and placing a heavy flat weight over top edges.
7. At base bottom, bend each of the bottom tabs
inward to perpendicular, then . . .
. . . flip the hull to be bottom down. Apply glue to
the backside of the bottom tabs. Slip the hollow ring
interior reinforcement ring into the base and push
down into place so that edges rest and fit into
the bottom tabs.
Apply fingertip pressure inside along edges to
secure tabs to ring.
8. On the base bottom exterior, position and attach
the hexagon cover to hide seams and reinforce
the bottom of the box.
9. Position and attach the interior accent inside
the base box bottom.
LID ASSEMBLY
10. Prepare the lid by bending back on straight line
perforations for cross-wall and vertical wall perf lines,
bottom tabs and side tabs.
11.  Carefully "pinch" bend back along the curved oval
edge perforation lines.
Also re-bend the division perf lines that extend
to the oval points to be "valley" folds.
12. Form the lid panel into a tube to overlap
the straight edges across the split tabs at opposite
side, adjust for top to bottom and mid lines alignment,
and join seam.
NOTE that it is extremely important that this seam
be secure before proceeding. If possible, press
the lid in flattened configuration with flat weight
until thoroughly dry.
13. At lid bottom, bend the rim tabs inward and
attach in place all around.
14. Begin to bend the upper lid sections inward . . .
. . . gathering the top straight edges into the center . . .
. . . until the petal points come together at the center.
NOTE: use caution during this part of assembly,
taking especial care NOT to press downward
too far which may cause perforations to tear away.
While holding the points together, allow slight opening
so that a dab of quick-grab adhesive such as the hot melt
glue shown here to be applied where all the point "wall"
edges can be joined, then pressing points back together again.
Hold in place until glue is dried or congealed.
15. Bend the side tabs of the under-lid concealer back,
then apply glue to the tabs faces . . .
. . . and also to the under-lid folds (ribs) and center "star".
Insert the disc into the underside of the lid and . . .
. . . apply pressure and hold in place until secure.
LID DECORATION & FINISHING
16. Add some slight back curl to the middle portion
of each of the snowflake oval edge overlays by
drawing the shape across a moderate diameter dowel
as shown here, in a similar manner to the way
curling ribbon is drawn across a scissors blade or
hard edge. This will help the overlays hug the curve
of the lid.
17. Test position the first overlay to get a sense of
where the tips will extend beyond the lid edge.
Remove, then apply glue to the underside leaving tips glue-free.
Center the point between ovals approx. a generous 1/4"
short of convergence, with curved edges following
the oval indent recesses, with outward "corners"
exactly at the oval recess tips. Once adjusted to
be as accurately positioned as possible, hold in place
until secure.
18. Repeat for the remaining overlays, taking care
to match up the straight "seam" edges of overhang tips.
19. Bend the tip reinforcement ovals back slightly.
Apply glue to the face of first oval, position it
under a pair of tips so that . . .
. . . the bend aligns
at overlay straight "seam" edges, punch holes
and tip edge align. Hold in place until secure.
Repeat for the remaining snowflake tips.
20. Prepare the half snowflake extension accents
by bending back at perforations between flake
and rectangle accent.
21. Position each over one lid side wall, centered . . .
. . .with half flake bend snugly pushed up to align
at lid bend. Hold in place until secure.
Repeat for the other half snowflake accents.
22. Position and attach the optional side wall
full wall rectangle accents on each side wall
to cover and hide the rectangle extension of
the half snowflake accents.
23. To close the box, carefully fit the lid over the base
and push down into place fully. NOTE that
the fit is relatively snug.
24. Position and attach the thickened snowflake accent
onto lid centered at oval recesses convergence.
If desired, add stud or jewel.
