Build
four tiers plus dome then stack on a hexagon center post
concealed inside for this
decorative honey hive.
Features removable dome to
reveal a box “compartment”
beneath (only top tier deep) where goodies or
small gift can be added for a
special occasion.
Built-up thick scalloped base with
multi-bend arch door
overlay are final details.
Coordinates well with the “Honey Bee 3D Mini on
Wire” design
that can be an added embellishment.
Measures approx. 5.5” tall
with 6.5” diameter base.
ASSEMBLY: 1. Identify and cut the shapes:
A base scallop circles (5) B base scallop top layer
C post tube D post support collar (7-8)
E main shape for tiers #1 and #2 (2)
F add-on strip extensions for tiers #1 and #2 (2)
G interior support box for tiers #1 and #2 (2)
H main shape for tier #3
I add-on strip extension for tier #3
J interior support box for tier #3
K main shape for tier #4
L main shape for container insert
M container insert add-on strip extension
N top half-dome wedge panel (2)
NOT SHOWN: door accent overlay
2. Prepare the post support collar stack by
layering the shapes and gluing together,
taking care to line up the cut edges, especially
the interior hex opening.
NOTE: use a flat weight such as this fabric-covered,
re-purposed free weight to press the stack flat
while it dries, to prevent curling or warping.
3. Layer the base scallop circles in the same manner,
taking care to line up the edges as precisely
as possible. Press with a heavy flat object
until completely dry.
4. Position and attach the top layer scallop circleto the base stack, matching up outer edges precisely.
5. Prepare the tier #1 (and tier #2) shapes by bending
back on all perforations for panels, panel sections,
wedge, side and end tabs.
NOTE that care should be taken to bend and crease
the tiny wedge-shaped tabs between the side wall
upper and lower extensions, pinching to crease
completely along edge.
6. Prepare the main shapes for tier #3 in the same
manner. NOTE that the tier #3 shapes include
a tiny circle punch symbol in tabs for identification.
7. Join the add-on strip to the end of connectedstrip for tiers 1-3, overlapping straight side edge
over opposite center tab ONLY to per line,
and gluing in place.
8. Complete the tier shaping by bending back
the upper edge panels to position the short straight edge
to overlap the wedge tab to perf line as accurately
as possible, gluing the seam.
9. Repeat for all wedge seams along the upper edge,
and for lower edge also.
10. Bend the slotted and finger opening bottom
panel into position to overlap outer edges over
the bent-inward strip edge tabs, aligning bottom
straight edges to perforation lines . . .
. . . adjusting the shape for best centered,
and glue in place.
NOTE that it may be helpful to place the assembly
face down on flat surface and use fingertip pressure
along each tab from the inside, to complete the seams.
11. For tier #1 ONLY, position the post support collar
on the inside bottom, taking care to match up
the orientation of the hex openings of each as
precisely as possible, and glue in place.
12. Prepare the support boxes for all tiers by
bending back on all panel, flange and tab perforation
lines, also making sure that the slot tabs are separated
from the side panels.
NOTE: it may be helpful to keep slot tabs unbent
at perforations to assist insertion later.
13. Create the box tray form by bending the sidepanels back, tucking tabs behind adjacent straight
edge of wall, and gluing four corner seams.
(All support boxes are assembled this way.)
14. Prepare to insert the support box into tier #1
by bending bottom flanges inward, then orienting
the center hex opening to match the post collar
hex opening, then . . .
. . . insert tabs into tier bottom panel slots.
On base backside, bend the tabs outward
and glue in place.
15. Prepare to attach tier #1 over the scallop base
by comparing the hex positioning circle of base
with the orientation of the hex opening of support box,
and rotating base so that they match.
16. Apply adhesive to bottom panel, thenposition, match up the hex openings (seen through
opening - or simply center as well as possible
on base) and apply pressure all around to securely
attach in place.
17. Apply adhesive to the side wall upper flange tabs
and to the support box top surface.
Bend the top octagon "lid" panel down into
position to align each edge with the side flange
perforation edges, adjust as necessary,
also adjust the panel so that the hex opening edges
match up with the hex opening of support box
as precisely as possible.
18. Prepare the post tube "wrap" shape by bending
back on all the perforation lines.
19. Form the post shape into a tube to overlapthe straight long side edge over the opposite flange
to perforation line and glue in place, working finger
pressure up and down the edge until all is secure.
NOTE: this will be easiest if the 1/4" wooden dowel
is used as a form, wrapping the strip around,
overlap edges and gluing as described.
20. Slide the tube to be even at the end of dowel,
then mark the opposite edge of tube, then
remove the dowel and cut to size at mark.
21. Insert the dowel piece into tube, and apply
glue to dowel, slide tube to be even at ends.
22. Apply glue to the end of the post, theninsert it into the top opening of tier #1, rotating
to align with hex edges, then . . .
. . . continue to insert down until it "seats" into
the hex opening of the post collar at base level.
Hold in place with pressure until it is secured
in upright, perpendicular position.
23. Insert tier #2 onto the post, threading it
through bottom and then top layer openings,
apply glue to bottom of tier #2 . . .
. . . slide together, adjust with slight rotation if needed to make sure tier corners line up . . .
. . . and apply pressure to join in place.
24. Prepare the door overlay shape by bending
as shown, with "mountain" bends at top and
bottom two perforations, and "valley" bend for
remaining middle perforation line.
25. Select the front face of hive assembly,
then position and attach in center, with bends
aligning with hive shape of tiers 1 & 2.
26. Thread and attach tier #3 onto assembly
in the same manner.
27. Prepare the tier #4 shape by bending back
on all perforation lines.
NOTE: the shape shown has been modified in
the final cut file to include attachment flanges
at each of the eight wall outer/upper edges
(see step 29). Bend the "added" flanges forward.
28. Bend the walls back to align the segmentsof the side seam, beginning at bottom, to overlap
the straight side edge over the opposite tab
to perforation line, and join. Then . . .
. . . bend the top segments of the seam together
in the same manner to complete at portion.
Repeat for all the other seven side seams.
This is how tier #4 should appear at this point.
29. Prepare the compartment "insert" tray by
bending back on all perforation lines for both
the main octagon-attached shape and the add-on strip.
30. Position the add-on strip's left straight edge
over the main shape's similar strip right end,
overlap edge over attachment tab, adjust, and
glue in place.
30. Form the strip portion into a ring to bringedges together, overlap straight over tab
and complete the seam.
31. Bend the base "lid" into position, adjust so
that edges and bent-inward tab perf lines align,
and glue in place.
32. Apply glue to the bottom of the tray, then . . . . . . insert the container into the top opening of
tier #4, push fully inward, and attach bottoms . . .
. . . taking care to align the hex openings as
precisely as possible to allow post to thread on.
33. Apply glue to the edge flanges, and pressto attach each to the adjacent container wall.
34. Insert the post through the bottom of the hex
opening of tier #4 assembly, apply glue, push fully
into place, rotate to adjust as needed, and attach.
35. Prepare the dome shapes by bending back
on all wall segment and tab perforation lines.
36. Bend two adjacent wedge "edges" together
to align straight edge overlapping opposite tab
to perf line and join segment seam. Then continue . . .
. . . in same fashion to bend, align and join the secondsegment seam, and then . . .
. . . the top/third segment.
Complete all segmented seams in the same manner
for both half-dome shapes.
37. Position the two half dome assemblies together
so that the bottom short seam
can be completed. Then continue . . .
. . . to align and join the next three seam segmentsas previously described, completing one half, then . . .
. . . positioning to align the second half three segments
plus bottom short segment, and joining each.
38. Position the dome over the top of post and
tier #4/compartment so that the flanges of compartment
are inserted under the dome edges.
Here is the completed 3D hive.
