Fancy folk art decorated dimensional thimble box
consists of upper "dome" section
with tightly-fit "rim"
base.
Accent shape overlays on upper portion
suggest "dimples", with design division "band" strips,
connected oak leaf design with contrast underlay,
two-layered circle halves at
dome side ridges.
Rim has dimensional rim that folds into place
at hexagon base edge.
Measures approx. 4.5" tall x 4" wide x 4.75" deep.
ASSEMBLY: 1. Identify and cut the shapes:
A lid main side shape with lid
(with top, upper and side "dimples" overlay, accents)
B lid side shapes (5)
C side "dimple" overlays (6 total)
D upper side "dimple" overlays (6 total)
E oak accents, underlay accents, half circles (6 ea)
F mid band accent strips (6)
G base H base side
I base underside cover J base inside cover
K base accent band strips (6)
2. Prepare the lid main side shapes by bending
back the side tabs, also bending back on all
rim, body and lid cross perforation lines.
3. Join the regular side panels to the main
side panel, one at a time, by overlapping the
straight side edge at the long tab flange's
perforation line, adjusting so that top
and bottom edges are matched, and
gluing in place.
When all six panels are attached (only at the
long tab) the joined panel should luck like this:
4. Prepare the oak accent shapes by positioning
and attaching one underlay behind the leaf
cut out shape and gluing in place.
Repeat for all 6 accent shapes.
5. Prepare the half circle accents
by attaching the smaller half circle on top of
the larger, with straight edges aligned and
centered, smaller curved edges offset inside
larger curved edge (complete 12 half circle units).
6. Position and attach all accent shapes onto
the lid panel:
DIMPLE SHAPES: top dimple, upper and side dimples
all offset a slightly within their respective panels
(as defined by cut edges and perforation lines)
OAK ACCENTS: centered in lower portion of
each panel, with side straight edges at side
perforation lines, and bottom edges along second
perforation line from the panels' bottom
HALF CIRCLES: straight edges aligned at
between-panel perforation lines or cut edges
MID BANDS: centered between lower dimples
panel and top of oak accent.
7. Form the thimble into a tube to bring together
the straight side edge of main panel to
overlap the opposite long tab perforation line
as shown here.
8. Complete the 6 upper short seams by bending
at the perforations to bring the straight edge
to overlap the adjacent tab per line,
and glue in place.
9. Complete the "cap" seam by bending the top
down so that straight edges line up
at corresponding top tab perf lines,
and glue in place.
(NOTE: it may be helpful to first position
and attach the back edge opposite
the connected cap side, then adjust
to make the two sides between align)
To help the cap seams attach, it may
be helpful to reach inside the thimble cylinder
to press against the seam/tab with a tool
such as the new eraser end of a pencil.
10. Complete the 6 bottom short seams by
bending the side panels to bring the straight
edge to overlap the adjacent tab perf line.
11. Bend the 6 rim flanges to the inside of the
cylinder and glue in place.
12. Prepare the base main and separate side
shapes by bending:
side bottom flanges back (under),
side wall and top perf lines back,
inner flange forward.
LEAVE . . .
. . . the triangle "tab" between sections UNFOLDED.
Bend the "between" small tabs forward,
13. Align and join the separate side panel
to the main base panel by overlapping
the short straight edge at the end tab perf line.
14. Attach the walls to the base hexagon by
bending wall sections into position to tuck
the long flange behind the hexagon edge.
Complete attachment of 5 walls.
15. As the final wall section is being positioned,
also tuck and attach the end tab behind the
corresponding straight short edge of the
attached wall section.
16. Prepare the bend the walls into final position
by applying a dab of glue onto all
the triangle tabs . . .
. . . on the short tabs . . .
. . . and under the edge flanges.Then . . .
. . .fold the inner walls into perpendicular position
with "miter" straight edges at wall top face
overlapping the triangle tabs to dash marks
while at the same time . . .
. . . pushing the tab outer edge to line up with
the dash mark guide lines on the (back/inside)
of the base hexagon.
This will help the walls line up to be perpendicular
and create the correctly sized space to hold
the completed thimble cylinder in place.
Use a narrow tool like the end of this spatula
or a knitting needle, etc., inserted in turn
into the holes on the hexagon bottom to provide
a "press against" surface to help the inner tabs
attach securely to the neighboring wall edge.
17. Position and attach the accent rim strips
to each of the outer base walls, and . . .
. . . the inner hexagon cover over the inner
flanges, and . . .
. . . the bottom hexagon cover over the base
bottom.
18. To close the box, fit the cylinder
bottom edge into the rim recess,
and push fully into place.
The fit should be snug enough
to hold it in place.
Here is the completed thimble 3d box.
What a beautiful thimble box! Any sewer would love that as an addition to their decor :) I am excited to see these sewing themed projects in the SVG Attic store soon!
