Bunny Canister Wrap Tutorial

Ready for your Easter and Spring seasonal crafting,
this bunny rabbit dimensional accent design cut file
will soon be available from SnapDragon Snippets
through the Silhouette America online store.
Construction for this cutie begins with the card stock
rectangle which is built into the modified octagon canister
with head, body, face, dimensional bow tie,
and layered carrot are added.
A dimensional hat with attached ears
has a flange on the underside that fits neatly
into the canister opening, to keep it in place

CONSTRUCTION:
1. Identify and cut the shapes:
A. canister
NOTE that this image shows the older version that used a Cyrstal light plastic canister; updated cut file substitutes a rectangle, 2 hollow and 1 whole rim
B. lower hat brim
C. lower brim flange
D. Upper brim
E. front crown segments (with ear slots)
F. crown segments
G. hat band - front
H. hat band - back
I. body and body base
J. head, head base, and muzzle
K. ears and inner ears
L. face features
M. carrot layers
N. dimensional bowtie with knot shape

3. Pre-assemble head/muzzle, bow tie, ears, carrot and carrot top units. (See bow tie assembly in step 5 below)
4. Position remaining facial features onto face/muzzle. Apply glue to the vertical center only of head and body backside. Only the center portion will touch and attach because of the canister's rounded shape. Align the straight top or bottom head/body edges with canister top/bottom straight edges.

Attach the bow tie and assembled carrot.

5. Assemble the bow tie by bringing the side bow edges to overlap at the center (take care to keep bows "loopy" and not flattened), then glue these layers and hold until secure.

Wrap center strip over front and under to back, then glue end in place. Glue contrast knot shape over front at center.

6. Begin hat assembly by folding upper tabs back and gluing in place. Leave the end fold-over tab un-folded until step 7, next.

7. Form flange strip into a ring, bringing ends together. Insert "tab" end between front edge and back tab until straight edge aligns with the single perforation of the tab. Hold in place with end tab enclosed between flange front and back tab surfaces.

8. Insert flange tabs into slots of lower bring. NOTE that brim slots form and oval, with longer slots at center front and center back. Take care to insert matching size tabs into appropriate slots.

9. Carefully work the tabs fully through so that flange is snug against backside. Fold tabs outward and glue in place.

10. Begin crown assembly by folding each segment (2 with slots for front, 6 regular segments) on perforations. Fold lower edge tabs outward, all others backward.

11. Join the first two segments by applying glue to tabs of the first (at right), and overlapping corresponding straight edges of the second. Align and join the bottom tab and edge, then the top tab and edge while also joining the centers. Take care to align segment perforations to be in a straight line.

12. Continue joining segments to complete front half. There will be a regular segment as the center front, a slotted segment on each side of center, then one more regular segment (mine is added to the right of the assembly half shown).

13. Complete the back half in the same manner, with 4 regular segments.

14. Align and join crown halves by joining tabs under corresponding straight edges in similar manner to other segment joining. It may be necessary to get the back half mostly "aligned" before gluing the front half. Work quickly so that glued edges can still be adjusted if necessary.

 15. Identify the FRONT of the crown (regular segment between slotted segments). Remember where the FRONT is for placement of the front hat band strips and for alignment of upper and lower brims in step 17. Insert upper brim octagon opening over completed crown, then slide brim down until edge aligns with tab perforations of crown assembly.

16. Fold tabs back and glue securely in place.

17. Fold the small front hat band at end perforations, then position and glue in place on the front segment. Repeat this process for the longer, back/sides hat band segment, aligning the perforation folds with the segment "seams".

18. Prepare ears. Glue pink inner ear in place, centered. Fold ear into a boxed pleat on perforations (center perfs as "valley" folds, side perfs as "mountain" folds). Bring the side creased edges together, apply glue near the bottom and hold until glue is secure.

19. Insert the "tab" end of ear through crown segment slot.

20. Fold tab outward and glue securely in place.  Repeat the insertion step for the other ear.

21. Add a little glue behind the base of the ear to attach it to the crown (just at or below the hat band area).

22. Position the upper assembly BRIM over the lower assembly BRIM, taking care to align the fronts: upper front is where the small band section is; lower front is where the widest flange tab and slot are. Glue securely in place.

23. Finish the assembly by sliding the hat/ears onto the canister by inserting the flange oval into the oval opening of the canister.

AND WITH THAT, YOU ARE FINISHED!

3D Leprechaun Canister Wrap Tutorial

Perky little leprechaun 3d canister character design
for cut paper is now available
from SnapDragon Snippets
through the Silhouette America online store.

Canister (octagon-based) is built with top
and bottom rim rings and bottom whole insert,
then 2d decorations are added to front
to create perky leprechaun, including the pot of gold side accent.
Dimensional hat has a bottom surface flange
that inserts into the top of the canister
to hold it in place.

CONSTRUCTION
1. Identify and cut the shapes.

shown here:
canister main tube shape
top rim reinforcement
bottom rim reinforcement and whole insert
pot of gold accent shapes

B. lower brim
C. brim flange
D. hat wedge sections (8)
E. upper brim
F. hat band
G. shamrock decorations
H. shirt base
I. lapels (left & right)
J. button circles
K. face
L. beard/hair
M. face details
N. bowtie
(not shown: bowtie center shape)

2. Prepare the canister by following this link to the Scarecrow Canister Character tutorial, then return for the specific steps that complete the Leprechaun character.

3. Pre-fold each of the hat wedges as shown, side tabs toward back, lower tab outward, body sections inward.

4. Apply glue to side tabs on one wedge. Overlap adjacent straight edge of second section so that edge and perforation align, also that horizontal perforations of section line up. Hold until glue sets, then shape the next section above to align edge/perforation in the same manner, then repeat for the third (top) section.

5. Join four sections into "front" half and four sections into the "back" half.

6. Apply glue to remaining side tabs of front and back halves, then align and join to complete crown.

7. Apply glue to the upper surface of crown lower tabs, then slide the upper brim over the top and down into position so that brim can attach to the tabs. Press each tab to thoroughly attach brim to crown.

8. This is how the upper brim and crown assembly should look from the inside.

9. Fold the flange outer tabs back. Apply glue to the surface between tabs and flange backside (except near the edge opposite the end tab), then hold in place to secure full length of flange.

10. Apply glue to the tab front and back, then insert between the flange and back tabs, push in to ensure that end edge and tab perforation line up, then apply pressure to secure.

11. Identify the long flange sections and inner tabs that will be positioned at center front and center back of brim. Also locate the long slots on the lower brim that correspond to these long sections. Insert tabs into slots, gently working them into position fully so that tabs extend completely to the brim backside as shown. Apply glue to the inner backside of tabs, fold to the center and hold in place until each is secure.

12. Apply glue to backsides of brim(s) that will touch. Rotate crown/upper brim so that a wedge section faces EXACTLY forward and parallel to one of the large flange sections, then join hat upper and lower sections. (NOTE that wedge sections should also line up and be parallel to flange back large section, and side end sections.

13. Pre-fold the hat band at perforations, then glue in place at bottom of crown with seam at back. Position and attach shamrock decoration shapes.

14. Join the left and right lapel shapes over the corresponding parts of the shirt base shape.

15.  Insert face into beard/hair shape, then carefully slide into place until top straight edges align. Slot ends should fit snugly to ears. Turn assembly over and apply glue to the surface that touch, behind upper and lower areas of face shape.

16. Assemble eye white and black shapes, then position and attach face details: mouth, nose cheeks, eyes.

17. Assemble bowtie by folding side loops inward (avoid creasing the loops), folding center knot section and wrapping over secured ends at center.

18. Fold bowtie loop ends in to center (notched end first) and glue overlapping center tabs in place, then fold center downward over tabs, with lower tab wrapping to backside and glue in place.

21. Position and attach shirt and lapels assembly to the front wider face of the canister, with bottom edge aligned at canister bottom.

Position and attach head/hair assembly above shirt/lapels, with head top straight edge aligned at canister top edge.

Position and attach prepared bowtie at the bottom of the beard.

22. Position and attach the pot of gold accent assembly with bottom edge at canister bottom edge. NOTE: move the pot to the right until the handle extension is comfortably under the bowtie extension.

23. Place the hat onto the top of the canister with the flange extensions fitting into the rim of the canister.

Here again is the completed project. P

Now you are ready to place him with your other St. Patrick's Day decor,
or fill him with green jelly beans and give away.
Or perhaps you will make one for
EACH of your favorite "leprechaun lovers".

Enjoy!

Snowman Cannister Wrap & 3d Top Hat Tutorial

Start with an empty plastic Crystal Light or Arizona Tea cannister,
wrap & glue paper rectangle and embellish with face,
scarf, heart, carrot nose, coal buttons.
Build his 3d top hat that has an under-brim extension
that fits inside the canister opening to keep the hat in place
(as you can see within inset above).
Cut file is now available from SnapDragon Snippets
through the Silhouette America online store.

CONSTRUCTION:
Step 1. Identify and cut the shapes.
A. crown
B & C. crown top circles
D. brim ring
E. middle brim reinforcer
F. brim flange
G. bottom brim
H. body rectangle wrap
I. scarf band strip
J & K. scarf pieces
not letter-identified: hat band, face shapes, heart, coal buttons

Step 2. Add curl to (A) crown shape by pulling with pressure between thumb and fingers while forcing lead end downward. Curl the complete length.

Step 3. Overlap end straight edge over tab end at perforation (don't fold the tab back).

Step 4. Fold top edge tabs inward.

Step 5. Apply glue to the INSIDE or UNDERNEATH surfaces of folded tabs.

Insert (B) crown circle into the ring, force down into position and apply pressure evenly all around the edge as the glue cures. Placing the assembly with outer surface of B flat on the tabletop and inserting fingers or other pressing tool and repeatedly moving and pressing around the interior works well.

This is how the crown should look at the end of this step, viewing from the top, outside.

Step 6. Fold the lower crown tabs outward.

Step 7. Apply glue to the outer/upper tab surfaces, then slide the crown tube into the (D) brim ring. Force the ring all the way down, make adjustments so that the tube circumference matches up to the tab/crown angle as well as possible. Apply pressure evenly and all around as the glue cures.

Step 8. Apply glue to underside of (C) crown circle then position it on top to hide the tab construction.

Step 9. Fold the (F) flange in half along center perforation. Unfold and apply adhesive to backside of segments (except leave the end without the end tab un-glued until Step 10) then re-fold and apply pressure until each is secure.

Step 10. Fold at each vertical section perforation to form the flange roughly into a ring.

Step 11. Unfold and apply glue to the end left un-glued in Step 9. Insert the opposite end tab between, overlapping until perf guidemark even with straight edge of end. Re-fold flange and apply pressure until all surfaces are secure.

Step 12. Prepare the flange to insert tabs into (G) bottom brim slots by identifying the longer front and back tabs, and rotating the flange so that these correspond to the longest slots.

Insert tabs into slots and pull through completely. This process may involve barely inserting tabs as you work around the ring, then working tabs all the way through until flange is flush.

This is how the underneath surface of G should look with tabs inserted through.

Step 13. Apply glue to the inner surface of each tab, then fold toward the center and apply pressure until each is secure.

Step 14. Apply glue and join (E) middle brim reinforcer to backside of flange/brim assembly.

Step 15. Apply glue and join the lower assembly to the underside of D that is part of upper assembly.

This image shows the empty "undressed" (label removed) plastic Crylstal Light canister with the flange being inserted into the opening. The flange should fit fairly snugly and will hold the hat in place well.

Step 16. Apply glue to lower and upper edges and one side edge of (H) body wrap rectangle, then adhere to the empty cannister, placing first side edge slightly past the back center and keeping upper and lower edges even with canister edges. Particularly watch the lower edges for alignment since this will affect how the snowman stands when completed. Before completely wrapped and in place, apply glue to the final side edge, then overlap the first edge and hold in place until all are dry.

Step 17. Position and glue in place the (I) scarf band. The top edge should be about 3.75" from the bottom canister edge, as shown here. Take care that it is straight and parallel to the canister ends.

Step 18. Position and attach the remaining shapes, including J & K scarf pieces (a fold-over shape is included in the cut file, if you prefer), and hat band. Because of the curving shape of the canister, heart and nose may be attached only partly, so take care when applying adhesive so it stays in the attaching areas only. Also note that black eyes can have a contrast highlight base shape if desired. "Dry-fitting" the smile to see where all the other pieces, including the cheeks should go, may be a good idea.

Hope you had fun making your
snowman canister!
