Small Box with Thick Heart Tag in Tuxedo Holder

 

Diminutive gift box packs a punch with lid decoration of 

dimensional heart tag with side fold that fits, when closed, 

into a replica tuxedo standing pocket. 

Box lid includes small slot to help hold heart tag’s point, 

providing further stabilization. 

Box measures approx. 2.5” wide x 2.5” deep x 1.625” tall 

(with heart tag in place, ensemble height is approx. 3.25”).

ASSEMBLY: 1 Identify and cut the shapes:

A box base   B base interior accent "liner"

C box lid    D lid top accent shape

E tuxedo heart holder   F lapel accent overlays

G heart center (connected) panel

*H heart front build up layers (3-4)

*I heart back build up layers (shaved side edge; 3-4)

J slot test panel and strips

*(use these strips stacked to test and determine

how many heart layers G, H & I should be cut to fill

the slot for good fit into tuxedo holder and

lid center slot)

2. Use the slot and strips to determine how many heart

layers will work best with your selected card stock for heart

to properly fit the tuxedo holder depth and the thickness

of the slot at center top of lid where heart tip will insert.

Stack the 8 cut strips, then insert into the test slot

(these images are from a different project, demonstrating

the procedure using a dark color, not the heart red).

If the 8 fit snugly, cut 3 front heart layers, 1 center connected

heart panel (counts as 2 layers), and 3 back layers.

If there is still some room, consider adding an additional

single front OR back heart panel to cutting quantities.

3. Prepare the heart stack. Bend the center connected

heart panel at vertical center perforation line.

Stack and attach the front heart layers, and stack and 

attach the back heart layers taking care to

match and align all cut edges. Work quickly to . . . 

. . . position and attach the front stack onto the center

panel, and position and attach the back stack onto

the back panel, matching precisely the edges 

that line up

Place the heart assembly on a flat surface, then press

with a heavy flat object placed on top, such as

this thick book - possibly with other heavy object on top

to help keep the glued-up assembly flat while glue dries,

helping to minimize warping or curling. (This process

may require several hours or overnight.)

4. Prepare the lid and base shapes by bending back

on ALL perforation lines for main panel, side panels,

side flange tabs and rim flanges.

5. Bend the lid into tray form with sides up, side flange

tabs inward. Apply glue to the outside surfaces of flanges,

then . . . 

. . . bend adjacent side panel into position, edges

aligned to flange tab perforation line, and glue seam.

Repeat for the other three corners and seams.

6. Apply glue to backside of rim flange, then bend

down to wrap over side flange tabs to inside of lid.

Repeat for opposite rim flange.

7. Apply glue to remaining two rim flanges backsides,

then bend to the interior of the lid in similar fashion

to action in Step 6, and glue in place.

Repeat Steps 5-7  to prepare the base of box.

8. Prepare the tuxedo holder shape by bending forward

on ALL perforation lines except . . . 

. . . the vertical pairs of perforation lines that will create

the side "walls" of the compartment where heart will sit.

9. Fold the shape to bring the center front short

edges together, then . . . 

. . . apply glue to the tiny connector tab face.

Re-fold flat so that the tab is under the opposite

straight center front edge, adjust so center front

edges abut together, and attach tab.

10. Bend lapel shapes down into position, then . . . 

. . . position and attach (optional) lapel overlays.

11. Press bottom tuxedo flanges together then

insert through the lid accent shape slot from 

the front side, and slide down until slot edges are

at the flange perforation lines.

12. Position and align the back flange bottom edge

to be even with the accent panel's edge and glue

in place. (This will assist the tuxedo shape to "pop out"

to create the compartment depth.)

13. In similar manner, bend the front two flanges

into position so that the bottom edges align with

accent shapes, AND the straight center edges abut,

and glue in place.

14. Apply glue to underside of accent/tuxedo assembly,

then position onto the lid top panel, with edges slightly

inset from panel edges, and glue in place.

15. Apply glue and insert the base accent shape into

the bottom of base assembly and attach there.

16. To fully assemble the heart tuxedo box, the thickened

heart 'tag' is placed into the interior compartment

of the tuxedo holder . . .

. . . the pushed into place and downward so that

the heart's tip inserts into the lid top panel slot,

which will help stabilize it in position.

. . . then the snugly fitting lid is placed over top

of base.

Prior to gifting, remove heart and open,

pen a sentiment, then close and re-insert.
