Two Quilt Block Cards: Assembly

Presenting "Flying Swallows" & "Star N Nine" quilt cards.
These traditional patchwork blocks in small formats are focal points
of 6"x6" square cards that are perfect for stitchers,
quilters, folk art enthusiasts and others.
Fronts are layered in "mats" that conceal or reveal the colors
that present the patchwork, with a few cut shapes
overlaid or inserted into a "window" to add detail.

ASSEMBLY: A) use a sharp blade when cutting.
B) If using liquid adhesive for the multiple layers of card fronts,
place the glued-up assemblies under a large-enough, flat
and heavy weight such as a non-precious book to allow glue
to dry completely while pressed. This sometimes takes a few hours,
but will help avoid unattractive curling or warping of the layers.
C) For Swallows design, high contrast is desirable.
D) For Star N Nine design, use high contrast with background.

Flying Swallows Quilt Block Card
1. Refer to cut file to cut quantities in your selected color scheme.
Cut file coloration refers to sample color for reference.
2. Position and attach the "swallows" mat over the block
background (slightly smaller to avoid edges showing).

3. Position and attach each of the 8 individual diamond shapes
onto the center position on each of the diamond "trio"
extensions of the "swallows" mat.

4. Position and attach the "eight point star" mat onto

the assembly, matching side edges as precisely as possible.

5. Position and attach the narrow borders onto edges
of the assembly. There are two options for this. Option 1:
illustrated here, cut and place square-ended strips on
two opposite panel edges, then placing miter point borders
along remaining two ends so that they overlap the first borders.
Option 2: use four miter point strips with angle ends abutting
as precisely as possible at corners.

6. Fold the base panel back at the half perforation line.
Position and attach the front panel assembly, offset with even
narrow margins, onto card base front.

7. Place the center square into the cutout window.
NOTE that this will fall through until the background mat is
attached onto the narrow border mat as shown in
Step 13 of assembly.

8. Position and attach the matched-to-background
notched squares around the center square with
inward corners exactly next to the window corners,
and using the guide mark dash cuts to further assist
with positioning.

9. Position and attach the four "nine-patch" squares
in the corners of each of the notched squares.

10. Position and attach each of the "star" base shapes
at each corner of the assembly where they can
"slot" into the notched square edges.

11. Position and attach each points base shape
over corresponding portion of star base shapes.

12. Position and attach each of individual polygon shapes
over left and right points at each corner of points base.

13. Position and attach the front panel assembly over
the accent panel that shows through as narrow borders.

14. Fold the base panel back at the half perforation line.
Position and attach the front panel assembly with
borders panel, offset with even narrow margins,
onto card base front.
