Double End Popper Gift Boxes

 

Clever gift boxes to decorate for holidays, seasons or 

occasions with boxy ends that pull sides-outward 

to open and push back inward to close. 

Decorate with coordinated center and end overlay accents,

 fussy-cut text from specialty print paper, stamp, 

or print a festive greeting on accent oval. 

 Then fill with candy treats. Surprisingly easy to assemble. 

(Use solid card stock that appears the same 

on front and back.) 

Gift box sizes: when assembled and fully closed

medium approx. 5.125” long x 1.625” wide x 1.625” deep 

(that’s large enough to insert a standard plastic 

gift card diagonally);

small approx. 4.25” long x 1.4” wide x 1.4” deep.

ASSEMBLY: 1. Identify and cut the shapes:

for the medium box: A main box hull

(this should be cut from stock that appears

the same from front and back)

B center accent overlays (4)

C end accent overlay (8)

D oval and E sawtooth oval decorations

2. Prepare the hull by reversing the cut shape to be 

FACE DOWN then bending on the 4 long-wise

perforation lines as "mountain folds".

3. Without turning over, rotate the hull shape and

bend on the cross perforations - as "valley folds"

on the two perf lines at each end, and as

:mountain folds" on the center-most two lines.

4. Bend the outside perforation back to present

the face side rectangle shapes defined by 

fold lines. Position and glue in place four side

accent overlays on each side, within the spaces

defined by the fold lines, with a very narrow offset margin.

5. Unfold, then refold at the line that runs down

the center of the "arrow head" cut outs. This

configuration will present . . .

. . . the center section as it will appear when

the box is built and eventually closed.

Position the center accent overlays, one in each

rectangle section as defined by perf lines.

Just to check that the accents are on the correct

faces of the hull, NOTE that the center accents

are on the back and the side accents are on

 front respectively.

6. Begin box assembly by adding liquid or dry tape

along the back face of the side flange, center portion only.

Bend the accent edge walls inward at the first perf line . . .

. . . form the hull into a tube (center accents outward)

to bring the straight side edge to overlap the flange tab

opposite to the perf line, adjust for top-to-bottom

alignment, and glue seam.

Apply pressure along the seam to secure.

7. Configure into its box form and work with the ends

to get the "miter" cut edges to overlap the adjacent

straight edges, and work to get the end tab and straight

edge to begin to come together. This may involve . . .

. . . pushing the ends down slightly into "closed" 

position

Slide the non-tab side wall into final position, then . . .

. . . tuck the tab under and work until the edge

and perf line are as closely closed and 

parallel as possible.

NOTE that there will remain a slight gap at seam

edge, in order to allow the ends to be larger to

fit over the center hull girth.

8. Once end seams are secure enough, work the ends open 

and closed a few times so that this "mechanism"

works easily enought.

9. When one end is pulled outward, the box is open

and can be filled with contents of choice, including

the Lindor chocolate bars - 5 will fit snufly.

The large box can hold a standard plastic gift card

when inserted on diagonal.

10. Add additional decorations as desired, including

a narrow ribbon or twine wrap and tied bow,

with the layered plain and sawtooth ovals.

NOTE the sample project has the accent oval assembly

overlaid across ribbon and glued there to help hold it secure.

11. The smaller box version follows identical

assembly. Accent oval is smaller, and capacity

is also reduced. It will hold 3 Lindor choc balls.
